Tax Identification Number ...
The N.I.E, Número de Identificación de Extranjeros, equivalent to the N.I.F or Número de Indentificación Fiscal borne by all adult Spaniards is your tax identification number as a foreign resident. To own a property in Spain, to purchase a car or to apply for the residencia, you need to obtain an NIE. This is obtained from the foreigners' department at your local Spanish police station. You will need to fill in a form and produce your valid passport and two passport photographs. Alternatively your lawyer can obtain this for you.

You are not only entitled to obtain a residency card but obliged to if you plan to stay in Spain to live, work or engage in business activities for more than 90 days.
With residency, British and Irish citizens have the right to take up any kind of paid employment, register as a job seeker and claim unemployment benefits, if you are entitled to them. This also means the same rights on working conditions, pay, sick leave, holidays, redundancy, trade union membership and access to vocational training. There are exceptions: the armed forces or police are not an option and certain public posts are excluded. As an EU citizen you can, though, become a public employee in Spain if you are prepared to sit the (often difficult) competitive examinations, know as oposiciones.
You can enroll your children in Spanish state schools and provided you fulfil the entry requirements, you may also study at a Spanish university.
There is no restriction on the right to open a bank account, move money in and out of the country as nationals do and apply for mortgages.
The right to vote in municipal and European elections. In the case of elections to the European Parliament, if you register to vote where you live you forsake your right to vote in your home country. You may also stand as a candidate in both municipal and European elections.
